India celebrates the Republic Day on January 26 every year as a national holiday in India. Marked by commemorative parades, national flag hoisting, displays and exhibitions by various states throughout the country and by three wings of the armed forces on Janpath, New Delhi, the year 2022 will be observed as the 73rd Republic Day in the country. The significance of this day stems from India’s constitution, which was brought into effect on 26th January 1950. Notably, the constitution was written by the drafting committee, which was heralded by the iconic Dr BR Ambedkar. The constitution affirmed India’s global presence as an independent, sovereign republic. Historically, on 26th January 1930, the Indian National Congress proclaimed Purna Swaraj, the declaration of India’s independence from colonial British rule. Republic Day is celebrated all over the country with immense pride and valour, which honours the constitutional values of independent India. Most educational institutions host cultural programmes and flag hoisting ceremonies, with the President of India hoisting the national flag at the India gate. Heads and dignitaries from other countries are invited as guests for the ceremony. Honouring the martyrs and army men of India, the PM puts a wreath on the Amar Jawan Jyoti, which is followed by a 21-gun salute and award presentation to not just brave soldiers in the form of Paramvir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, and Vir Chakra, but also to general citizens who displayed strength and courage in times of adversity and danger.
